DEC Nigeria is a membership, non-governmental, non-religious, non-political organization that is providing social and micro financial services to women groups, communities and NGOS in Nigeria to enhance their capacity for sustainable development. The Development Exchange Centre (DEC) was estabilished in November 1987 as a result of a joint research conducted by the Canadian university services Oversea(CUSO) and the Adult and Non Formal Education Agency (ANFEA) Bauchi State.

Summary of Position:

  • The Communications and Learning Assistant will support the implementation of communication strategies across all project activities. In addition, the Assistant will provide oversight for the project’s communication initiatives, including design, content quality, and overall consistency.

Key Responsibilities:

Communication & Visibility:

  • Support in documenting CASCADE activities in Nasarawa through photography, videography, and field notes.
  • Draft success stories, human-interest stories, case studies, and social media content highlighting project impacts.
  • Assist in designing IEC materials, newsletters, flyers, and visibility products in line with CASCADE brand guidelines.
  • Ensure timely media coverage and manage local media relations during project events. Knowledge Management & Learning
  • Support the development of learning briefs, reports, and documentation of best practices.
  • Assist in organizing learning events, workshops, and community dialogues.
  • Contribute to the collection and curation of data, quotes, and testimonies from beneficiaries for knowledge products.
  • Maintain a communication repository (photos, videos, stories, reports) for DEC and CASCADE.

Capacity Strengthening:

  • Provide support to community structures and DEC field teams in documentation and communication practices.
  • Assist in training community volunteers, extension workers, and women leaders on basic storytelling and documentation tools.

Administrative Coordination:

  • Liaise with CARE Nigeria communication team to align state-level communication outputs with national strategies.
  • Support logistics for field visits, media engagements, and workshops.
  • Prepare activity reports and contribute quarterly communication updates.

Academic Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma in Communications, Mass Communication, Journalism, Development Studies, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in communications, media, or development sector (volunteering/internship experience will be considered).

Core Competence:

  • Proven skills in photography, videography, and basic graphic design (Canva, Photoshop, CorelDraw, or similar tools).
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to craft compelling stories from the field.
  • Familiarity with social media management and digital communication strategies.
  • Ability to work in rural communities with sensitivity to gender and cultural contexts.
  • Good time management skills with ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive, resourceful, solutions oriented and results-oriented
  • Excellent organization, planning and analytical skills; detail oriented
