General Position Summary

The Communications and Learning Officer will support Mercy Corps programs in Northeast Nigeria by documenting program implementation, capturing lessons learned, and producing communication products that demonstrate program impact.

Working closely with program teams and monitoring and evaluation staff, the officer will gather field-based insights, document beneficiary experiences, and translate program achievements into clear and compelling communication materials. The role will also support organizational learning by helping document best practices, program innovations, and operational lessons that can inform future programming. The Communications and Learning Officer will be based in Damaturu and will work closely with program teams across Yobe and Borno States while reporting to the Senior Communications and Learning Officer in Maiduguri.

Essential Job Responsibilities

PROGRAM DOCUMENTATION

  • Document program activities and implementation processes through field visits, interviews, and observation.
  • Capture beneficiary stories, testimonials, and community perspectives from program locations.
  • Produce written documentation of program activities including success stories, human interest stories, and case studies.

COMMUNICATIONS AND CONTENT DEVELOPMENT

  • Develop communication products that highlight Mercy Corps program achievements and impact.
  • Support the preparation of communication materials for internal and external audiences including program updates, briefs, and reports.
  • Ensure all communication materials adhere to Mercy Corps branding and visibility guidelines.

LEARNING AND KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

  • Support the documentation of lessons learned and best practices emerging from program implementation.
  • Assist in organizing learning sessions, reflection meetings, and After Action Reviews.
  • Contribute to knowledge-sharing efforts across program teams.

VISUAL DOCUMENTATION

  • Capture and organize photographs documenting program activities and outcomes.
  • Maintain a library of photos and communication materials for program use.
  • Ensure ethical standards and informed consent procedures are followed when collecting visual content.

Collaboration with Program and MEL Teams

  • Work closely with program staff to identify important stories and learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate with Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) teams to ensure communication products accurately reflect program data and results.

SECURITY

  • Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by country leadership.
  • Proactively ensure that team members operate in a secure environment and are aware of policies.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in communications, documentation, or knowledge management within humanitarian or development programs.
  • Demonstrated experience writing program stories, reports, or communication materials.
  • Strong photography, videography, and design skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Experience conducting interviews and gathering field-based documentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong team coordination. listening, and consensus building skills.
  • Fluency in Hausa.
