Role Overview

We are looking for a Lead Editor and Operations Coordinator to play a dual strategic and operational role. You will:

  • Shape our editorial voice and ensure content excellence across platforms.
  • Coordinate day-to-day editorial and production workflows efficiently.
  • Build and lead the editorial team from scratch.
  • Refine content that reflects WhirlSpot’s distinctive voice across all communications.

This role is perfect for someone passionate about telling unique African music and film stories, combining strategic thinking with hands-on editing and content management.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Leadership

  • Lead and manage writers, editors, contributors, and content producers.
  • Develop and maintain editorial standards for quality, tone, and style.
  • Curate, review, and edit multimedia content — articles, videos, podcasts, features — focusing on film, music, and cultural narratives.
  • Oversee content planning and calendar management aligned with brand campaigns and trends.
  • Foster creativity and support contributors in producing innovative stories.

Operations & Coordination

  • Manage day-to-day editorial operations, ensuring timely production and publishing.
  • Liaise with marketing, partnerships, and design teams to streamline workflow.
  • Monitor production timelines and ensure deliverables meet deadlines.
  • Maintain operational efficiency through documentation, reporting, and performance metrics.
  • Support budgeting, resourcing, and logistics for content shoots, interviews, and media projects.

Strategy & Growth

  • Align editorial content with overall brand and growth strategy.
  • Use analytics to assess content performance and inform future decisions.
  • Contribute to audience engagement strategies across digital platforms.
  • Drive continuous improvement in editorial processes and team productivity.

Project Management

  • Oversee website projects, brand guidelines, and content guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Media, Communications, Journalism, or related field.
  • 5+ years of editorial experience in digital media, publishing, or creative industries.
  • Proven experience in content management and operational coordination.
  • Deep understanding of contemporary film, music, and pop culture landscapes.
  • Demonstrated success in leading editorial teams and managing fast-paced projects.
  • Experience in the entertainment industry is a plus.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing tools, project management platforms (e.g., Trello, Asana), and analytics dashboards.
