The M&E Assistant will work closely with the Senior M&E Officer to support the implementation of monitoring and evaluation activities for NCA Nigeria. Based in Maiduguri, with regular travel to field locations, the position holder will assist in collecting, entering, verifying, and analyzing data to track project progress and measure impact. The M&E Assistant will also play a key role in ensuring that reliable, quality data informs reporting, learning, accountability, and decision-making processes, while promoting the integration of protection, gender, and accountability standards across all monitoring activities.
JOB ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Areas of Responsibility
- Work closely with the Senior M&E Officer to support the day-to-day implementation of monitoring and evaluation activities at both the Maiduguri office and in the field.
- Help gather, compile, and manage project data in line with the approved M&E plan, ensuring we track progress effectively.
- Make sure all data is entered accurately and on time into the relevant databases and tools.
- Check, verify, and clean data before it’s used, making sure everything is accurate and meets quality standards.
- Assist with basic data analysis and help prepare clear, easy-to-understand monitoring reports for both internal/external use.
- Work hand-in-hand with program teams and implementing partners to make sure data flows smoothly and reporting is reliable.
- Take part in field monitoring visits, data verification exercises, and support the documentation of lessons learned to help improve project delivery.
- Play a key role in ensuring that protection, gender, age, and diversity considerations are fully integrated into all monitoring and evaluation activities.
Main Tasks
- Support the Senior M&E Officer in planning and carrying out routine data collection activities in communities and field locations.
- Administer surveys, lead focus group discussions, and conduct key informant interviews in line with the approved M&E plan.
- Ensure all collected data is entered accurately into approved databases and tools, and that completed forms are submitted on time.
- Double-check and clean data to ensure it’s correct, consistent, and reliable before it’s analysed or reported.
- Assist with analysing data and help produce visual materials like tables, charts, and infographics for reports.
- Work closely with program teams to monitor progress towards project targets and indicators.
- Help organise regular monitoring visits and actively participate in joint supervision activities and spot checks in the field.
- Maintain proper filing and secure storage of all M&E data and documents, both electronic and hard copies.
- Support the preparation of weekly, monthly, and quarterly M&E reports as needed.
- Ensure that all data collection and reporting activities respect protection principles and are sensitive to gender, age, and diversity.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
As part of the M&E team, you will play an important role in making sure protection, GBV mainstreaming, and accountability to affected populations (AAP) are embedded in all our monitoring, evaluation, and feedback activities.
Your responsibilities will also include:
- Ensuring vulnerable groups are included at every stage of the project, in line with our commitment to Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS) and inclusive project cycle management.
- Promoting environmentally friendly approaches during all field activities.
- Making sure that all data collected — including assessments, plans, and reports — is disaggregated by gender and age, to reflect the realities of different groups.
- Supporting the development and implementation of gender, age, and diversity-sensitive Complaint and Feedback Response Mechanisms.
- Upholding and promoting the ACT Alliance Code of Conduct, ensuring its principles are reflected in your daily work and interactions.
Experience & Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of Monitoring & Evaluation principles, tools, and approaches, preferably within humanitarian or development settings.
- Practical experience in data collection, verification, cleaning, and basic analysis using both qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to ensure data quality, accuracy, and consistency.
- Proficiency in the use of data collection tools and software (e.g., Kobo Toolbox, ODK, Excel, or similar platforms) is desirable.
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently to field locations, sometimes under difficult conditions.

Education & Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in social sciences, Development Studies, Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation, or a related field.
- Additional training or certifications in M&E, data management, or related areas will be an advantage.
- At least 1-3 years of relevant work experience in monitoring and evaluation, data collection, or research, preferably with an International NGO or in a humanitarian setting.
