Key Responsibilities

  • Compare and assess the schedules of the channel and the DSTV, StarTimes etc. channels, identifying problems such as programme clashes at the earliest stage.
  • Assess the true value of altering a schedule at the last moment. To complete the schedule for the press deadline. To ensure that other members of the team and wider BBC teams and partners are aware of any changes in the schedule as soon as they are made, as well as the implications of such changes on the cost of the schedule.
  • Ensure effective communication with programme makers, Channel Controllers and Genre Controllers so that all are aware of the current schedule and the thinking behind the decisions of where to place programmes.
  • Effectively monitor the performance of the current schedules by discussing and reviewing audience figures with the Audience Research team.
  • Stay abreast with current affairs if unscheduled changes need to be implemented.
  • To support the Head of Planning and Scheduling to prepare contingency plans should live events, for example, run over or under time.
  • Work with the Planning Manager to help ensure the financial viability of schedules and keep them fully informed of changes to schedules.
  • Identify and work with the Planning Manager to support recommendations in respect of the financial consequences of major changes to planned schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Effectively support in producing the most competitive and imaginative schedule possible, ensuring it complements the schedules of the other planned programs competes effectively and meets the strategic objectives for the channel.
  • Responsible for the short- and medium-term management of the schedule on a day-to-day basis with direction from the producer.
  • Be the key authority for certain detailed information exchange with programme suppliers and other TV business support team.
  • Effectively undertake segments of scheduling as directed by the Producer, including acquired programmes supporting editorial requirements.
  • Maintain the detailed current schedule and advise on the mix of programmes needed to fulfil strategic objectives and ensure the audience research is utilised to properly inform and support scheduling changes.
  • Anticipate and resolve cross channel scheduling issues.
  • To optimise the flow of information across and between different services to ensure that schedules across all services are complementary and that opportunities to share themes and avoid duplication / clashes are taken.
  • Maintain a detailed knowledge of changes in all competitor schedules.
  • To pay attention to competing programme launches and major competitive initiatives.

Person Specification

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Electronic Technology or related degree
  • Understanding of short, medium- and longer-term tactical scheduling strategies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of key competitors, their schedules, and strategies.
  • Good understanding of audience research and analysis. Good understanding of how audiences watch television. An understanding of changing audience needs and the evolving broadcasting environment and the implications for scheduling and commissioning.
  • An understanding of the way in which programmes are commissioned, financed and produced. A demonstrable knowledge of the Television channels and their brand identities.
  • Financially literate and strong numerical skills.
  • A detailed knowledge of the structure of the BBC and of its transmission and editorial policies and guidelines.
  • A demonstrable and informed enthusiasm for the media.
  • Good computer skills; experience of word processing and using spreadsheets.
  • Experience of using and adapting IT applications and interrogating databases, including complex data extraction and manipulation and of translation of such data into user friendly formats.
  • Editorial awareness.
