Role Overview
We're looking for a strategic storyteller and PR professional to craft compelling narratives around Pulse, our content, and the cultural moments we create. You'll manage media relations, build partnerships with journalists and ensure Pulse is consistently positioned as the definitive voice of African pop culture, sports, and business. This role is about translating what we do into stories that resonate locally and globally.
Key Responsibilities
Media Relations & PR Strategy
- Manage journalist/media relationships across Africa & globally; pitch stories to drive consistent top-tier coverage and features.
- Develop and execute PR strategies to boost Pulse's visibility, reputation, and initiatives.
- Monitor media coverage and industry trends to identify opportunities for Pulse to lead conversations and measure PR success.
- Monitor reputation, prepare rapid-response plans, and protect brand integrity during a crisis.
- Position Pulse leadership (CEO, Directors, Content leads) as thought leaders through speaking opportunities, op-eds, and panel participation.
Storytelling & Content Development
- Lead brand storytelling by creating overarching narratives, key messages, and frameworks that align with Pulse's voice and support major initiatives.
- Develop case studies and success stories showcasing Pulse's impact on culture, creators, and brands. Collaborate with content and marketing teams to identify stories worth amplifying externally.
- Ensure consistent messaging across all external communications and touchpoints.
Requirements
- Strong experience in PR, communications, journalism, or brand storytelling.
- Proven track record of crafting narratives that drive impact.
- Excellent writing & editing skills; ability to adapt tone for press, social, internal, or executive audiences.
- Deep understanding of the African media landscape, digital trends, social platforms (Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn), and influencer/creator ecosystems.
- Media relations expertise: Comfortable pitching, negotiating exclusives, and handling high-profile stakeholders.
- Strategic thinker with creative flair able to turn data/insights into compelling stories.
- Organised and proactive: Manage multiple projects, deadlines, and budgets effectively.
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field (Master's a plus).
